Day 46 - "Let me tell you a story" / Phoenix Bound

The heavy rain that fell overnight had slowed to a steady light rain as I left the hotel.

Checking the radar I decided I needed to hang out for an hour or two allowing the rain to stay ahead of my travels to Phoenix today.

Of course my hangout of choice was McDonalds across the Colorado River in Bullhead City, AZ.

While I was downloading my podcasts this one guy with the messiest/dirty laptop keyboard and screen to my right caught my interest. He was on the phone with the computer repair shop in Las Vegas to get it fixed.  I thought the keyboard was bad from food and drink particles, but as we strike up a conversation he tells me he has a computer virus.

It turns out to be a ransom virus that he got when he was trying to watch racing online and he got a pop up on the screen saying he needed the latest Adobe Player to view the races so he clicks the link and its a bogus pop up and the link installed the virus.  Ouch! I actually felt bad for him as he is Canadian down for the winter and the virus attacked his online banking on his laptop and he got a call from the bank asking about trying to make a transaction and he said it wasn't him.  They froze his account.  Ouch again!

I can see how this happened.  From time to time we get legitimate pop ups on the screen and download the update.  He just did what came natural.

He left for the hour ride to Vegas.

Then a commotion started between a man who was on his laptop and a guy with his wife.  The guy with the wife who are in their 70's made a loud-enough to hear comment about people using the WIFI and sucking up seating space and it was directed to the other guy in his learnt 60's with the laptop.  He took exception with the negative outburst and a 3 minute soliloquy ensued from the guy with the laptop.  By the way McDonalds was busy but the complainer was already seated and there were still open seats.

While this was going on I made a comment to the guy to my left that was closest to me.  We were both sitting on stools.  He asked what was going on as he has a hard time hearing.

After giving him the lowdown we sparked up a conversation that lasted well over an hour.  He is Jack from Des Moines and is 80.  He travels the southwest by himself since his wife of 47 years died a few years ago.

He is wearing blue jeans, blue jean button down shit with white tee under with some words that I can't see on it.  Over the shirt he had a blue jean jacket, the kind with the built in gray hoodie that makes it look like you are layering a sweatshirt & separate jacket.  He is wearing a ball cap from Mexico and white sneakers with two Velcro straps.

Why do I tell you all this? Well let me tell you a story he says.  He told a story after story after story.

He must have told me 25 stories.  He is well off financially having run a successful concrete business for 42 years.  He plays poker at casinos most nights and does quite well from what he says.  He moves from Las Vegas Casinos to Laughlin Casinos back and forth a week at a time since he left Des Moines last November.

He told stories of he and his wife driving trips back and forth to Mexico driving all over the country in the 90's. When his wife's health started to fail they traveled to southern Texas and stay there.

He calls himself a storyteller and he is right that he is.  Very interesting man.  He asked me if I was lonely driving around by myself and I said no I haven't been lonely at all,  I meet people everywhere I go and have such interesting conversations like we were having.

He then asked if I was lonely for all the hours I drive in the car and I said no to this as well explaining that I go to McDonalds for the unsweetened ice tea and download podcasts to listen to on the way.  He doesn't have a smart phone.

Thinking about his question of me being lonely I think I am much more reserved at home than on the road.  On the road I talk to many people and most I meet like sharing their experiences.

I felt bad about telling him that I needed to hit the road now as I think he enjoyed my company as much as I enjoyed his stories.  I couldn't get away that easy and I think I got two or three more stories before  my final goodbye.

I would never have made him as well todo and I guess this is his image when he plays poker.  He tells me that when he is playing stone face players at the table he will start telling stories.  I asked him if that was part of his game to distract the other players.  I didn't get an answer but I did get a smile.

The skys were now clearing so I decided to head south to I10 and then west to Phoenix avoid any rain and leftover flooding.  Other than interstates out here that have culverts for runoff route 95 is asphalt poured on the curvature of the land and is subject to flooding.

Even with my delay I needed to watch for gullies where the wash crosses the road. At least I got a decent rinse of the dust off the Prius from the rain.  It was looking very dusty.

The Colorodo Belle from the AZ side of the Colorado.

Heading south on 95 here was a left over shower not bothering anyone in the desert.

Since I was following in behind the storm I got to see some interesting clouds.

After heading south to Parker, AZ I then headed west to Phoenix.

I caught this leftover storm north of I10 and west of Phoenix.

When the sun got low enough I got the partial rainbow.

I stopped for gas at Pilot and dinner at the connected Denny's and my plan worked as you can see the major rain had moved out and it was now 7:00 pm so the traffic was less.

Phoenix city lights as I passed through for my stealth camping for the night.

What Are The Chances?

I'm bringing some items to the car's passenger side here at the Colorado Belle before checking out and a man walks up and looks like he is going to his car's driver's side, so I close my door and offer him a way into his car.

He says, What are the chances?  I look puzzled and he says two Massachusetts cars.

Well a conversation later the What are the chances? got more interesting that both of us being from Massachusetts.

He comes out here every winter like me.  He used to have a van like me and got rid of it as it cost too much to drive it across the country, like me. He lives in and out of his car like me.  He stayed at the Colorado Belle last night like me to get out of the weather. He is retired like me.  We both live in towns with a W.  His being Westfield and mine Westminster.

I didn't ask but I would guess we are the same age.  We do differ as he likes breakfast buffets and I like dinner buffets.

Oh what are the chances that two guys with all those similarities get to park next to each other in a parking lot that has hundreds of parking spaces on the same day?

Oh one more.  What are the chances we would be at our vehicles at the same time.

I am always amazed by such coinincidences when they happen to me.

I asked him a rhetorical question before we parted.  How many retired guys from Massachusetts do you think are roming around the southwest?  I wouldn't have thought not very many, but two met today in the Colorado Belle parking lot.

I love when such anomalies happen.

Day 45 - Death Valley Hike / Laughlin, NV Casino / 8000

Good morning in Death Valley.  I decided to take a hike a Canyon about 30 miles back the way I came in.  The pictures in the brochure for Death Valley.

First I have been remiss on writing about people I meet.  Cropping and editing my pictures and the writing this blog takes at least 2 hours each evening.

I met a group of Jeepsters.  My word for them.  Yesterday I met them when I was checking out the bathrooms as they were juggling to park their rigs in their spaces.

They had pickup campers, Class C and Class A motor homes all towing Jeeps.  The woman I met told me they were from Jelly Belly.  The look on my face must have told her that she could have been speaking a foreign language as she came back and said, You know Auburn.  I returned with Auburn where and she returned with Auburn, California where they make Jelly Belly candies.  I said well I've learned something new today.

So I asked about the Jeep group.  They were staying the week and they drive in Death Valley.  I said you must know where to go as these tails they travel on are not on a map.  She said you learn where you can go and the Rangers will give guidance.

On the way to the trailhead I took some pictures along the way.

The morning light provided for much better pictures giving mor definition to the features of the land.

Lots to explore.

Snow in them there mountains.

This is called the Devil's Cornfields

The sand dunes

Check out the difference between this picture of the sand dunes to the last one.

At the base of this mountain is the trail. 2.5 miles on a dirt road from the main road.  The dark center is the canyon.

The picture above is what the canyon is called.  Mosaic Canyon was made from water carving it coming down the mountain.

The hike went in about a mile do the hike was not long but it did go up hill quickly.

I met a couple from Idaho who travel a lot.  They got stuck in that rain storm I took a picture of yesterday that was in the north part of Death Valley.

He had a Toyota Land Cruiser many years ago that he travel around in for work living in it. He wanted to hear about my Prius setup.

After my hike I needed to get out of Death Valley as weather was headed in this way and with the elevations of the mountains around snow is a possibility.  I drove to Pahrump, NV on my way to AZ.

You can see the beginning of the clouds heading in.

The clouds got thicker.

While I'm at explaining things, yesterday's blog came out late as the cell service in Death Valley (in the limited area they have it) is not AT&T and on my phone it comes up as out of network.  I learned last year out here that you can't use too much data or AT&T will shut you off.  Unpublished rules.  Well,  I waited to this am to send the blog when I got to McDonalds on Pahrump, NV.

Sitting at McDonalds I was checking the radar and weather reports for a couple destinations in AZ and they still had flash flood warnings issued.  I drcided I would not go to Phoenix today or Qiartzsite for flooding concerns.

It came to mind that I get offers for special rate rooms at the Colorado Belle Casino in Laughlin, so I made a reservation and headed there.

The clouds kept getting thicker.

There was snow in the pass on the way to Las Vegas from a past storm.  I had some wet flaked on the windshield.  The weather service is predicting rain to snow here later today.

Now in Las Vegas I knew I only had to deal with rain now for the rest of my trip today.

I went to Safeway for some snacks in Bullhead City, AZ across the Colorado River.  You can see the Colorodo Belle Casino in the distance.

I arrived at the hotel and paid $24.00 including taxes under the special promo for the night.

I settled in the room for awhile and graded the work of my students.

Then walked to the adjacent casino Edgewater for their buffet for $13.99.

At dinner I met a couple from the Los Angeles area who were staying at the Edgewater Casino having visited their family in Bullhead City for the weekend.

We had a nice conversation about our respective families.  They were a bit surprised to learn of my solo travels.

The weather forecast calls for this rain not to move out of the area until tomorrow night.  I will decide tomorrow if I should stay here another day.

And I passed the 8000 mile mark on this trip and I'm guessing 7000 miles to go.

Day 44 - Clouds & Death Valley

Last night we had a very brief shower that left a few drop spots on the car.

This morning the left over clouds remained.  More showers are forecasted for today.

I was looking at clouds and thought of past blogs with so much blue sky's and now I had womderful cloud formations for my scenery.

As i drove easy I pondered where I will go next I see showers all over AZ and southern NV.  The two places I was thinking of going tonight was Quartzsite, AZ and Phoenix, AZ have an advisory for possible heavy rain and the potential for flooding as a result.

I was sitting at the Pilot Gas Station in Boron, CA and I decided to head north and spend the night in Death Valley, CA.

Off in the distance the clouds were delivering rain and snow.

In the desert valley I had partly cloudy skys.

I take the less traveled road through Trona, CA where this dry lake bed is mined for boton used to make borax.

It is very low in this valley.

Eventually make my way up the western mountain range of Death Valley.

Here the air is rising fast over the 5000 foot range and you can see clouds forming.

As I make my way to the Death Valley basin there was this rain storm that had formed over the north valley.

Here I am looking in the opposite direction and the clouds on the right are forming on the west range and getting heavier as more moisture comes from the west.

I arrive at the overflow sunset campground at Furnace Creek that holds about 200 sites with flush toilets water and no showers.  The Check-in process is automated.  It's $12.00 a night to stay but with my senior card there was no entrance fee and I only have to pay $6.00 for the night.  Such a deal.

Here I am parked away from most of the campers as I will be walking across the street on the other side of the trees.

Here is what camping looks like here.  Must get hot in the summer.

The sign says record temperature of 134 on July 10, 1913.

The thermometer says 82 degrees but in the shade its about 75 degrees.

There is a post office here.

Borax Museum display

Lodging

And a general store with Ben and Jerry's at $7.99 a pint.  Worth the extra money if you are so moved as the ride out of the valley to get a treat will take hours.

While  walking around a rain storm was brewing.

Here the rain is evaporating before it gets to the ground.

We got a few sprinkles and here we have sunset & clouds.

Wild flowers here at Furnace Creek.
