Day 24 1/26/17 - Where I'm Going Hint: 54° 40' or Fight

 

Yesterday after I left Havasu City and took the Mohave Highway off of I40 to Bullhead City.

Here along the Colorado River the sand has consumed the road only to have heavy equipment move it off into15 foot bankings on the side of the road.  Testimony to the amount of rain they have had here.


Here is my destination for the night.  The Colorado Belle Casino.  No not to boondock, but to stay in the hotel.  You will find out why below.


The Colorado Belle is in Nevada across from Bullhead City, AZ.


I haven eaten out once in 3 weeks although I was looking to go while in Quartzsite.  Last night was my chance and went to the Edgewater Casino buffet.

I arrived early having gained an hour crossing from AZ to NV and there were just a few people there.  By the time I walked out stuffed to the gills,  a couple of bus loads of people arrived.  Yes I ate too much.

This is why I stayed here last night.  That's right $16.88 for a hotel room for the night.  Heck it was a bit more for the buffet with tip.  In comparison, it costs $12.00 for a shower at Pilot truck stop so I planned this for my stop before I headed out this morning still driving north.


I'm headed out this morning heading north again on 95.  Check out the snow on the mountains.  So much rain and snow this year.


I stopped in Boulder City to do laundry so I have enough clean clothing for my long weekend getaway. 


I will be at my destination tonight.  I hope the hint above helped with where I am headed.

Is that NY NY in the distance?  I must be in Las Vegas.

I've given up my Prius for an airplane to get to my destination way north if here.

Day 23 1/25/17 - Moving North - Sara's Crack Hike


If you are a good detective, knowing this is a morning picture you can tell I'm headed north from the shadows!

Ok that picture of my Prius sitting on the vista last night was from Dome Rock BLM Land west of Quartzsite.  I stopped their last night for both convenience and for the opportunity to say HI to New acquaintances Ming & Elaine, who travel in a very interesting custom fiberglass camper on a Tacoma Pickup truck.  You may remember I had looked into a light-weight camper for my Tacoma.  Ming's custom camper addresses some of the concerns I had with the Fourwheel Campers I looked at before and wrote about.


This morning I was up on my way on AZ95 north with a Walmart stop in Parker, AZ for shoe laces, blister bandages, fruit, and wet wipes. My hikers have shoelaces with multiple knots.


North of Parker AZ95 follows the Colorado River with many trailer parks on both the AZ and CA sides of the river.


I wanted to continue my exercise hiking so I decided to stop in Havasu City, AZ st Sara Park for a hike through Sara's Crack to the Colorado River.


I have hiked Sara's Crack before but not all the way to the Colorado River.

You start off walking some distance in a wide wash.


The Crack is narrow and with spots that you need to climb as high as 7-8'.  The highest spot you climb has a poly rope bolted to the rock as to climb back you hold the rope and you plant your feet and pull and climb/walk the face of the rock.

Last year when I was here there was more sand in the Crack leaving less climbing.  Recent heavy rains have scraped out the sand with the force of the water.


After leaving the Crack you walk in the wash until you reach this thicket just before the river.  You need to climb the side of the bank to get around the thicket as there is no path through.


Sara's Crack hike brings you here at waters edge near the large rock pullers.


Straight ahead is a rest spot and the beautiful Colorado River.


I met a couple on their way out as I was headed back and they told me of the arch high above the Crack.  I climbed the side of the Crack to get this picture.  I thought the path went all the way around the Crack, but it didn't so I had to climb back down and back though the Crack.

I like looking down for things as I hike.  I found this animal print.  I have no clue what it was from.


I took this picture before heading down to climb back up through the Crack.  In the Crack I met 2 couples wanting me to take their pictures, that I was glad to do.  

I then grabbed the rope and scaled the 8' rock face.  Three of the four people followed.  The last woman was apprehensive to grab the rope, plant her feet perpendicular to the risk and pull the rope as you walk up.  Four of us all offered our support and encouragement.

My day of travel isn't done as I continued to head north.  Can you guess where I'm headed for a long weekend?

I guarantee you will be surprised and interested where I'm going.  Of course there are some close family and friends that know, but the rest of you don't.  

I'll give you a hint (and possibly a history lesson) tomorrow.

Day 22 1/24/17 - Last Night At The Slabs / Los Algodones


Yesterday I decided to leave Quartzite and the RTR site and just get away to new surroundings for the night.  I decided on spending the night at the Slabs near Niland, California, although this is not a new place.  Some RTR folks I knew and others I didn't had gone over to the Slabs so this gave me a temporary destination.   Tuesday I will start heading north to a destination scheduled for Wednesday night.

Just so you know I typically don't write about where I currently located for security reasons.  One exception is attending the RTR as I was posting about it.

Above is a so called private compound at the Slabs.  Well, kind of private.  People here have no rules but an understanding that if they carve out a space and delineate it with stuff, in this case old tires.  It means stay out.

The sky is nice after a cool windy rainy day.  Off in the distance there is snow in the mountains near Palm Springs. 


We woke up to 38 degrees at the Slabs, and although I thought about a second night I decided it was a good day to visit Los Algodones, Mexico and do some minor shopping.  I passed through the famous Imperial Valley where much of the US fresh food is grown.

The land is irrigated with miles of canals fed by the Colorado River.


I arrived just before noon at the Indian Reservation parking lot where I pay $6.00 to park a few hundred feet from the entrance of Mexico.


It takes literally a minute or two to make your way a few hundred feet through the turnstile into Los Algodones.  It's only a few other feet until you have a plethora of pharmacies, dentists, and optometrists to obtain cost effective services.

So many snow birds come here you will never be alone in town.  The Mexicans are well versed st English too.

With a quick stop at the pharmacy, and a brief walk around a block to a shop to pick up a present, my shopping is done for today.  The woman I usually buy from wasn't there but on lunch break her husband tells me and being a repeat customer he treats me well with out negotiating price.

Having spent less than a half hour with my purchases it was time to go stand in about an hour line to get back to the USA.  See picture above.

The exit line to the US is lined with Mexicans selling all kinds of things including water, green vegetables, toys, jewelry, and just people looking for your pocket change or a dollar or two.


I was given a mild warning for a dirty passport card.  I use this for TSA travel in airports but it couldn't be scanned today as it was dirty.  He saw the sleeve that it came in sitting in my left hand and said that is why it didn't scan.  He said the metal in the sleeve is wearing off and transferring to the passport card. 

He mellowed a bit with me as I said it came in the sleeve and I thought I was supposed to keep it in it.  He went on to say cards are no longer issued in the sleeve for the reason we are discussing, as he typed in my passport number.

I can see how having to type in each card would get under their skin.  Especially with a 1/8 Mike line now trailing behind me.

I apologized again and thanked him and the trash was at the end of the counter and the sleeve was tossed in.

He never did ask what I bought.  Just what the purpose of my visit to Mexico today.  


I am trying out this BLM spot high up where I've never been before.  I'm actually liking this spot but I don't see any trails to hike from here.

Why You Want A LiFePo4 House Battery For Small Vehicle Living

Note: I am not affiliated with Bioenno in any way, and receive no compensation for my review of their product.  I encourage you, after reading this, that you do your own research into the technology and manufactures/suppliers and come to your own decision on what works best for you, and who you buy from should be based on your independent research.

I have been on the road for three weeks so far of my 2017 Travels, and I'm ready to report on my Prius House Battery upgrade to LiFePo4 Battery, from Lead Acid Gel Cells.

My friend David, who full-times in his Prius, said to me at the 2017 RTR; "You nailed it with a battery for small vehicles."

I hadn't had the time to take a retrospective view of my new LiFePo4 house battery design, and in the following days at the RTR, what he said to me sunk in.

While looking at all the car, van, and truck dwellers, I realized we all had something in common.  That was, lack of space for house battery, little time for maintenance of it, no ability to easily vent it general lack of knowledge of how to care for it either.

I don't want to get too technical here, as it isn't necessary to make my points.  My goal is to take the science out of using LiFePo4 in small vehicles.  It really comes down to cost, not fear of the technology, as it relates to the many benefits of LiFePo4. 
 
This blog post is why I believe that using a LiFePo4 Battery is preferable over Lead Acid Battery Technology.

 1. Off Gassing / Venting - I live in my Prius for 4 months a year, and although at low charge rates on Lead Acid batteries do not generate large amounts of off gassing, when you work to bring them up to full charge or quick charge Lead acid they do off gass.  

The reason I went with Gel Cells initially for my Prius house battery is for their minimal off gassing.  

AGM Batteries also have some limited off gassing when charging.  A small tube is applied to the 12 volt AGM Prius battery to address this.  



Wet cells are most susceptible to off gassing and why on manufactured RV's they are in a vented cabinet. This off gassing issue is why a number of people who put batteries in the passenger compartment use AGM Batteries, as a way to minimize the risk.  

As most vandwellers will tell you all risks are manageable, so off gassing is something that many manage and do well at it on the road. 

Note: Gel Cells, AGM, and Wet Cells are all Lead Acid Batteries. Also note that I do not know of anyone who has had problems with off gassing.  I do know a number of people that are sensitive to chemicals and it may be a concern for them.

LiFePo4 do not off gas when normally charging.  They do have pressure relief point that is used in emergency typically when it overheats.  I purchased my LiFePo4 Battery with a protection circuit to shut down if it gets too hot, thus eliminating my concern about a thermal problem.  

2. Battery Orientation - Lead Acid Batteries have to be oriented in one direction.  My LiFePo4 is actually upside down as the space I put it in on the left rear drivers side had a dip that didn't make the space flat and quite large enough for my LiFePo4 Battery.  Since I had made a protective plastic cover for the exposed terminals, the height of the protection allowed me to flip it over and it sits flat in the space.



3. Charge Cycles - Here we have to use specifications as I don't have the testing to support any claim.

Lead Acid Batteries have charging cycles in the hundreds.  I'm talking about wet cells, and seeing 500 charge cycles published, but this is for a properly maintained battery.

LiFePo4 has thousands of charge cycles.  From what I have seen published 2000 charge cycles can be expected and there is no maintaince to follow. In full disclosure it could be much higher for number of charge cycles, but there is a spec that shows that if you fully deplete the LiFePo4 battery as your way of knowing when to recharge, the number of charge cycles is reduced closer to 2000. I charge my LiFePo4 way before fully depleted and I consider the battery an investment and not just an expense.  The thought is similar to my Engel compressor fridge.  It was $860.00 delivered and I'm on my fourth year of using it.
 
4. Weight - Those of you that have moved Lead Acid batteries around know they are heavy.  For me my one LiFePo4 30 ah battery weighs in at 8 lbs and is just over half of the weight of the 3 8ah (24 ah total) gel cells I had before the LiFePo4 battery.  

5. Size - My 3 8ah gel cells consume almost identically the space as my LiFePo4 does.  The LiFePo4 is a tad bigger in total volume of space.

6. Available Amp Hours - Where LiFePo4 shines is in available amp hours.  Take my example of replacing 3 12v 8ah batteries for a total of 24 amp hours, and consider that generally only 50% of the Lead Acid Battery is available before you start to degrade the battery between charges.  

Therefore, I only had 12 amp hours available for usage on the Lead Acid Gel Cells.  I discussed that the space consumed for these 3 batteries was about the same as the LiFePo4 Battery.   

Now consider that you can get 80% usage out of a LiFePo4 battery.  My 30 ah battery that took the place of the Lead Acid Gel Cells will get 27 ah out of the same space.  In fact Bioenno says it is possible to get up to 90% out of their battery.  I generally tell folks I get 28ah of battery from my 30 amp hour battery.

7. Maintenance - Most people I know that have Lead Acid Batteries as house batteries don't care to maintain or forget to maintain them.  Checking water levels may not be easy if your battery is in a compartment where you can't see the fill caps.  You may be mobility impaired that prevents you from articulating in a position to get to them as Lead Acid batteries are down low and often under things.

Some folks advocate checking the specific gravity of the Acid in each wet cell as a way to know you are fully charged.  For the average person it may be beyond what they want to do on a regular basis.

8. Cost - Lead Acid Batteries are cheaper than LiFePo4 Batteries.  Lead Acid are better known and don't have the mystique that LiFePo4 Batteries have.

Remember when considering cost that the LiFePo4 battery having 80 usable captivity over Lead Acid is important.

Also that it can be recharged thousands of times.

9. Control Circuitry - I purchased my LiFePo4 from Bioenno after engineering my solution and many emails back and forth with tech support.

The internal circuits protect the LiFePo4 Battery from things like overheating, over discharging, short circuit, low voltage, and others.  Mine also balances the individual cells that make up the LiFePo4 battery for greater longevity.

People with Lead Acid batteries often try to install low voltage detection or watch a voltage on a volt meter, like I did when I had Gel Cells.  I can tell you I don't worry anymore with my LiFePo4 Battery.  If I forget the battery it will auto shutoff to protect itself from being harmed.

If it gets too hot it will shut off and not have a runaway thermal condition like You may have seen in the past in the news where the older technology started fires.

I wanted all the protection I could get in my LiFePo4 battery.

Note: There are many Lithium battery Technolgies with new ones coming along.  They sell Lithium drop-in replacements for Lead Acid batteries.  They are not the battery I bought for my Prius house battery.

Even LiFePo4 Batteries are not all with protective circuits.  This is why I've done the research and have shared it on my blog.  I believe in the protections offered by the internal circuits I have. 

10. Charging Is Specific To Chemistry - All chemistries should be to be charged correctly for longest life.  Lead Acid batteries have 3 chemistries and each should be charged at their specific charge voltages. 

Even with Lead Acid wet cell technology, each manufacturer can give specific charge voltages they recommend for their battery.  To meet these charge voltages it generally means that a specific charger and if using solar a specific charge controller that is programmed to the battery specifications.  From what I can tell most people do not look up the specifics of their battery's charge requirements and live with the results they get from charging off their alternator, built-in RV charger like I did when I had a Class B.

My LiFePo4 battery has a spec of 4 amp hour charge rate.  I found this low rate as unacceptable, and after working with Bioenno, I was told that the battery I chose could charge at 10 amps although spec says 4 amps.  Bioenno warranties their battery and they confirmed my warranty is in effect charging at 10 amps because the charging circuit inside the plastic housing of the LiFePo4 battery had been updated to a 10 amp charging circuit and the specs were not updated.

I can charge my LiFePo4 in 3 ways:

a. 10 amps with LiFePo4 specific charger either through 120v shore power or 120v from a 400 watt pure sine wave inverter off the Prius 12 volt battery. Charging at 10 amps allows me to fully charge in less than 3 hours.

b. 4.5 amps with my folding 60 watt panel through a 20 amp MPPT LiFePo4 Charge Controller.  Note: I bought a 20 amp charge controller in stead of 10 amps per the battery spec to allow me to expand my house battery setup in the future.  For now I do not charge over 4.5 amps as the panel wattage limits the amps to the battery.  If you were to buy a setup like mine you would only need a 10 amp solar charge controller.

c. 1.5 amps with a 12 volt D.C. Charger directly from Prius 12 volt circuit.  Although this is a light charge it is enough to maintain my Engel compressor fridge and still charge the LiFePo4 battery slowly.  I am still looking for a more robust D.C. To D.C. LiFePo4 charger that would charge at least 4 amps up to 10 amps so I can eliminate the inverter charger.  

Right now with the three ways I can charge my LiFePo4 battery, I was good  the first week at the RTR when the inverter was not working, and I got by with solar and the 1.5 amp D.C. To D.C. Charger until my new inverter arrived.  


11. The Choice Between Lead Acid and LiFePo4 - For me it was my lack of knowledge that kept me from moving to a LiFePo4 battery before now.  I was fearful to spend the money and make a mistake.  I was concerned about "the lithium scare".  I lacked the knowledge to design a complete solution.

Based on my concerns I know now why others generally don't move to Lithium battery technology.

I had to put myself through a knot hole to learn what I needed to have a system that would work for me.

The good news is that I have done the work to research and design a solution that can work for all small vehicle dwellers. 

My system is not the best for high (greater than 10 amps) current usage.  A different system would need to be designed, for the ability to charge LiFePo4 batteries at high current, say 60 amps to run large appliances.  

So my solution is not for everyone, but is scaleable to 100 - 200 watt solar panel systems, but you will be limited by charging a 100 amp LiFePo4 battery with the control circuitry to 15 amps.  If you want faster recovery charging for solar there are other LiFePo4 companies and products without internal control circuits to achieve this.

This post is only for small vehicle LiFePo4 solutions as space is an issue along with space on roof for fixed panels.

Note that you can charge the LiFePi4 battery I have at 10 amps, that means it will work well with up to a 120 watt panel.

Day 21 1/23/17 - Hike & Move


When I woke this morning I decided I was going to move on to somewhere else, as I have a couple days before a start a bigger adventure next weekend.  In the meantime it's time for some different scenery.

By my estimate there were about 5% of the RTR folks left.


First, before leaving Quartzsite, I wanted to get a hike in.  This location where the RTR is held is an excellent place to get out for a walk or hike.  Where I'm going it is not as interesting.  

Today, as I walked up to the area around the gold mine I decided to take a branch off the main road to another BLM ATV trail.

I checked my hiking software and I thought it connected to the road I hiked to the stone house.  I knew I could make a loop back to camp.

Above is the treck I took over a hill separating the canyon with the stone house and the mine.


If you come out here you can get a map from the BLM Office.  I use my map software on my phone.  Most BLM roads are listed as trails.


Since this is an old mining area you will often see relics and test holes and mine holes.


Mining claims are marked this way.  It does not mean you can't walk or ride on trails and roads, but it does mean you can't stop and pick up any rocks or minerals.


Most BLM Land have road markers like the one above that correspond to their maps.  They may include information about land usage.


I'm hiking in the mountains to the east and its totally cloudy and no sun.  Good thing as I didn't bring any water.  Typically if I plan to hike over 3 miles I bring water but today I forgot and luckily it worked out being cool.

The picture above is to the west where it has been sunny all morning.


When I got back from the hike I checked my shoes for cactus needles and I had 2 of them stuck in my sole.


I spent an hour this pm sewing the Velcro dots I stick to my curtains  to hold them from coming off the material.

Overnight they have been some of the Velcro dots that have come unglued causing gaps in my curtain edges.  I'm just tacking them on as the glue on the backside of the dots gets stuck to the needle and thread so I had to use alcohol wipe to wipe it off between sewing the dots.

Day 20 1/22/17 - Disc Golf / RTR Cleanup / Few Left At RTR


I went back and played the Sidewinder Disc Golf Course in Quartzsite this AM, as my toe still hurt from the blister I got walking and there were rain showers again on and off.

I played as good a game as the other day, finishing well under par.  This is my new feel good course.

I had two discs hang on these non-regulation baskets but I gave myself the point anyway. 


I headed back to the RTR around noon after a quick stop at the Roadrunner Grocery Store for some fruit.  I then joined a number of others picking up trash and things left behind.  Above is a rear wheel  (spare) cover that appears to have been left behind.  I checked it out and it appeared functional so I assumed someone would be back to look for it.

I filled up a plastic grocery bag with rubbish and dragged a plastic awning cover that was broken from before the RTR.  Also 2 4'x4' 1/2 ridged foam pieces that were left at a site.

We made a pile and met Bob Wells who was taking the trash to the dump today while it is open.


As the sun set tonight I estimate that there are still about 15% of us that have remained for a day or two.

I plan to move on to new adventures Monday or Tuesday.

Burning Van


As described in my last post, Burning Van became a closing symbol for the RTR.  For the last week the 3 dimensional plywood van was available to sign in preparation for it ceremonial burning the last night of this event.

If you care to look close enough to this side you will see where I signed along with oh so many other attendees.


Side 2 has just as much signatures as a testimony to the number of people that attended the RTR.  I would guess that many others never signed.

Thanks to Tony and Karen for the new and improved plywood version this year as the cardboard box last year burned way to fast. 


Above preparations are made for the signing of the Burning Van song as the van will be placed on the fire.


It didn't look as dangerous to put on the fire watching but the center hole in the van makes a good chimney.


At this point those with better singing voices than me were singing the Burning Van song.


Folks hung around for the final collapse of the van into ashes, and it off to our respective dwellings with some taking an invitation to music and pizza off in the distance. 

The location is off in the distance as the music people moved there after the concern that was expressed about noise.
